Fractured Fairy Tales Meets The Twilight Zone in this short story collection of four uniquely captivating, edgy, fantastical character-driven tales, each sprinkled with a touch of magic, and a powerful message that lingers long after the reads… 1. Ferrari Testarossa is his ‘lamp.’ Finnegus Boggs has been a Somalian warrior, an Egyptian scribe, a Cambridge professor. In 2015 he’s a doctor, and never in his over 5,000 yrs had he been carjacked. But Billy needs help to save his best bud, Tyron. Only a Marid Djinn has the choice to grant a wish. Will these two high school punks be awarded a chance to set things right and alter the course of their lives? 2. Hawk wanted the rabbit to present to a mate. Megan wanted her husband Mitch to wait, and talk to her instead of going to work. Neither got what they wanted, but both Hawk and Megan learned a valuable life lesson in Bird’s Eye View. 3. Michael still loves the family’s annual summer camping trip. His teen sister, Amy, doesn’t. It’s likely going to be their last year among the ancient redwoods, the majestic elks, and the seemingly glowing round rocks Michael discovers along the bank of the roaring river. The Activation is a cautionary [campfire] tale for bickering children, and the parents who fail to silence them. 4. Faith is a fashion designer in love with her husband, Billy Rogue. Billy is a famous punk rocker, in love with himself. Sylvester McCain is with the Morality Police, and has traveled a sliver of light to reset Faith’s path in life in The Morality Police.

Author J. Cafesin has written an intriguing set of short stories. Each deals in different way with the theme of personal responsibility. While that theme could come off as preachy, these stories embed fantasy elements that bring the reader to imaginary but just possible places. They are a particularly strong set if stories and a great read for young adults, and even some not-so-young adults.Among the best is Tales of Finnegus Boggs. Cafesin’s writing captures African-American lingo and makes you feel you are in the culture while you read this fantastical story. What is particularly interesting is the way the street language moves you towards apparent reality, while the fantasy character encountered takes you in the opposite direction. This intersection is the brilliant concept of this piece. Cafesin makes a good choice in presenting this story first. It’s my favorite of the set.
Her second short story, Bird’s Eye View, captures that same sense of time and place, in this case alternating point of view between a husband and wife - and then a bird. The goal of the story is admirable, and stated in a subtitle, Don’t Text While Driving. While the bird’s point of view is poetic, the discussion from the husband and wife is not just interesting but revealing--- showing how what we say is so different than what we often mean and how the consequences of this discrepancy can be devastating.
The third short story, The Activation, is a creepy but fun camping story about a family that is all-too-much like so many American families where everyone yells at each other. Except in this family there are repercussions for the hostility. I can’t reveal too much, but the symbolism is wonderful.
The last of the set of short stories, Morality Police, is particularly strong. This short story has more romance and is also shares some similarities to the author’s novels about strong female characters and the allure of rock ‘n roll men. In this story, though, the main character has the opportunity to examine her life and the choices she makes through an encounter with a supernatural creature – the morality policeman. It is a gripping and page-turning story, bouncing back and forth between the main storyline of the central character and then her occasional exchanges with the fantasy character.
Overall, Cafesin writes with flair, keeps the pace moving, and knows about the place, time, and even lingo of the set of characters of which she writes. This set of short stories would be great for a school project since there is so much underlying philosophy, while at the same time also a lot of fun.
